The Inaugural Ceremony of IIPM and International Symposium on Intellectual Property Management

On March 23th, 2015, the Inaugural Ceremony of the Institute for Intellectual Property Management (IIPM) and International Symposium on Intellectual Property Management in Universities and Research Institutes were jointly held by School of Management and National Institute for Innovation Management at Zhejiang University. Mr. Changyu Shen (commissioner of the State Intellectual Property Office of China, SIPO), Ms. Xiaoyun Lei (Director of Patent Management Division, SIPO), Mr. Yaling Gong (Director of Planning And Development Division, SIPO), Mr. Xiaoyue Lin (Director of Design Patent Examination, SIPO), Mr. Guohui Zhou (Director of Zhejiang Department of Science and Technology), Mr. Jiqing Hong (Head of the Zhejiang Intellectual Property Bureau) and other government officers attended the ceremony. The event also convened chief IP officers from leading companies such as Royal Philips, Huawei, Alibaba, and Zhejiang Geely Holding Group, and leading scholars from world famous universities including Tokyo University in Japan, Gothenburg University in Sweden and so on, who shared their managerial practice and insight on intellectual property management issues.

The first session of the event was the opening ceremony of the Institute. Prof. Zhaohui Wu (President of Zhejiang University), Prof. Xiaobo Wu (Dean of School of Management, Zhejiang University), Mr. Brian Hinman (Chief Intellectual Property Officer of Royal Philips), Prof. Yongming Li (Professor at Guanghua Law School, Zhejiang University), Prof. Frans Greidanus (Co-director of Institute for intellectual property management, at School of Management) and Prof. Can Huang (Co-Director of the Institute for Intellectual Property, at School of Management) unveiled the plate of the Institute and addressed to the audience. After the opening ceremony, Mr. Changyu Shen delivered a keynote speech. He congratulated on the establishment of the Institute and emphasized that IP has become a strategic resource and important factor for a country’s development, and an important component of its innovation capacity, so Chinese government would spare no efforts on further strengthening protection and utilization of IP. He expressed that establishing institute for intellectual property management in Zhejiang University would have profound impact, which would not only strengthen research on intellectual property management in universities, but also help to establish high-level think tank on the IP-related issues. Following Commissioner Changyu Shen’s keynote speech, symposium participants spoke from university and enterprise perspective respectively, discussing the development of intellectual property management in universities and research Institutes. Finally, the event ended with a round table discussion reviewing and further debating the key points made by various speakers.

The Institute for Intellectual Property Management was among the first institutes specialized in IP management education, training and research in the top Chinese business schools. The institute aimed to provide support for Chinese enterprises with regard to intellectual property management and contribute to the country’s innovation-driven development.
