Prof. Can Huang visited the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in Geneva, Switzerland on April 4th, 2016. He had a meeting with the Chief Economist Dr. Carsten Fink and Senior Economist Dr. Sacha Wunsch-Vincent to discuss opportunity for collaboration and also gave a presentation on “Patent Transaction and Multinational Corporations’ Patenting Activities in China”in the Economics and Statistics Division, WIPO. In the presentation, Prof. Can Huang discussed the transaction of Chinese patents based on an empirical study which aimed to understand the determinants of the licensing and sale of patents in China. He also included in the presentation his study on the quadic patent family which is defined as patent applications made at the European Patent Office, the Japanese Patent, the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and a national patent office of a fourth country. The study demonstrated that exploitation of large and growing market, responding to imitative threat and intense competition in host countries and strength of the intellectual property right system in the host countries motivated multinational companies to seek quadic patent family.
