Dr. Frans J.A.M. Greidanus studied physics and received his PhD from Leiden University in 1982. His thesis focused on a topic from low-temperature physics. In 1982 he joined Royal Philips for which he worked till his retirement in 2013. He started his career with Philips Research in Eindhoven where he did research on defects in semiconductors and magneto-optical recording. In 1989 he became department head at the Philips Laboratories in Briarcliff Manor NY where he was amongst others responsible for the development of blue lasers. After his return to the Netherlands he has been head of several research departments. In 2000 Dr. Greidanus became a member of the of the Philips Research Management Team, with global responsibility for video-, audio- and data storage. From 2005-2013 he was Head of Philips Research Asia and CTO Philips Asia and located in Shanghai. In the same period, he was, next to being a member of the Philips Research Management Team, a member of the Philips China Management Team. Currently he is amongst others, Qiushi Chair professor at the School of Management of Zhejiang University in Hangzhou China, co-director of the Institute for Intellectual Property Management of the School of Management of Zhejiang University, Advisor to the Wuxi Municipality, member of the Governing Board of the Foundation for the History of Technology and Advisor to the Executive Board of Tilburg University.
During his professional career Dr. Greidanus has been a member of several Board of Directors and Advisory Committees, both in the Netherlands and China amongst others “The Stichting Technische Wetenschappen” in the Netherlands, CQM-Consultants for Quantitative Methods, The Shanghai Science and Technology Commission and the Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce in China. From 2013-2015 he was Advisor to the Board of Eindhoven University of Technology.
Dr. Greidanus is “distinguished” member of the Dutch Physical Society. In 2007 and 2011 he received the Silver, respectively the Golden, Magnolia Award from the Shanghai Municipality for his contributions to the economic and social development of the City of Shanghai.
